Woodturning

Why WOOD?

Because you are special, worth the time and effort, and deserve something as unique and as authentic as you are. And if you are gifting one of our pieces the recipient will be most appreciative of a gift that represents who you are, your thoughtfulness, their value to you, and generosity.

I concede there are more modern/artificial materials that are cheap and easily go into the dishwasher but that is not who we are the way wanted to be treated (especially the dishwasher part). We, our memories, feelings, and how we want to be thought of us anything but disposable. Wood products have the feeling of life, and like us, wood seems to have a story to tell. Other materials can be purified, seamlessly mended, or recovered but once the wood is cut or burnt it is changed forever. And unlike plastic, everyone admires and appreciates wood pieces.

Wood products have value because we can identify with life. Concrete, clay, resins, metals, and stone never lived, never battled seasons, defended against disease, infection, and parasites, and never grew up, bore seeds, or hosted living organizes. Perhaps it is the ever-changing unique visual texture wood grain, that has the ability to indicate the years of life and hint at the conditions it lived, that we find most fascinating. Or perhaps we love wood because it connects us to the natural world and allows us to bring a bit of the outdoors inside. There is much to wood that can overload your senses, from look to smell. We identify a memory when we feel the rough texture of a weathered barn board, the curves, and dents of tree bark, or the silky surface of finely sanded raw wood. Laminates and veneers do a well in mimic the visual appearance but everyone can identify solid wood by touch, the sound identified with use, the intrinsic warmth when handled.

The goal of my works is to bring the experience to you, enhance the wood's story, and aid in the memories and feelings that are passed between family, friends, and generations. Whether those thoughts be of appreciation, Christmastime, a meal shared with friends, or that bowl candy we couldn't reach, we have something to share. The pieces that leave my shop are only crafted from unprocessed, naturally fallen trees, or reclaimed wood. ~No, I don't wish for storms.~ I personally harvest all the wood used, and YES this is difficult hard labor. The lumber often has unknowns (evil embedded nails, rot, insect holes and insects, bark inclusions, facture, and check, etc.) that are potentially a project-ender and dangerous...but each piece is unique, the tree donor appreciates it, wood is not wasted, the tree's life on not forgotten, and you are worth it.

I am thankful that you have reviewed and considered my works and would be honored for one of them to become part of your story and heritage.

FUN Facts: You are able to read this thanks to ~18 solar reacting autotrophs. The average person produces ~2.3 lbs. of carbon dioxide (CO2) per day in just breathing. The average tree will absorb ~48 lbs. of carbon CO2 per year and release the oxygen (O2) you need. (2.3 lbs. * 365 days/ 48 lbs./yr.= 17.4895833....we like trees and breathing (O2) so we'll round up).

No waste from my work goes to the landfill. The minimal waste produced is used by anyone willing to pick up the finest artisan mulch and chicken/pet bedding ever made, and some used as packing material. My end goal is to be beneficial to the environment, neighbors, and you.
